  just thought i'd start a thread about lucas revisiting star wars films and making new edits - for better or for worse.. first off, let me say that george lucas has a tremendous imagination and star wars (1977), also known as episode 4: a new hope, and the empire strikes back (1980) - episode 5 in the franchise - are two of my favourite films.

  .

  as progress has been made in special effects, including the development of cgi, it makes sense for lucas to go back and retouch the spaceships, laser blasts and light sabres, improving what was 70s and 80s effects.. but i feel that lucas' tinkering has been a mixed bag - some have been bad choices, some unnecessary and others have been good.. what do you think ... .

  While I think Luke's overall character arc was the right way to go (and so does Hamill if you read all his quotes) I agree that it was taken too far in a few spots. As for the end though, I can't think of a more "sacred" way for it to have happened.

  Lucas for years said that the novels, etc. weren't part of his personal canon. He was already developing the sequel trilogy before selling to Disney. They changed some things and added alot to flesh it out, but recent releases of the concept art and story treatment show that they're following his basic story beats. Even the prequel trilogy undid some of the material that had been published before it.

  i was talking to someone a few years ago and he said in his congregation they have a rail of white shirts prepared in the cloakroom for if a speaker doesn't have a white shirt on.

  it was a rule in their hall that all brothers in the platform must wear white shirts when going talks and if the speaker won't comply when asked to change into the shirt they provide an elder in the congregation will do the talk instead.

  i have never known any other halls do it so it must be a rule the elders have made up without gb input.

  Back to the OP about the OOT:

  Yes, despite the fact that I prefer the special editions most of the time, I still think it's wrong to withhold the originals. They're history, they're significant art, and they shouldn't be allowed to rot but should be preserved and readily available. Disney owns Lucasfilm 100%, so the only real reason they're holding back is a combination of a gentleman's agreement with Lucas and not wanting to anger some fans. Maybe after he passes away, who knows.

  I thought I did answer, I said "our" generation. To answer your question: No. I grew up with the OOT (not a huge fan at the time) and I didn't even see the prequels when they came out. I later saw all 6 in my late 20s, about 10 years ago and I think that's why I wasn't clouded by nostalgia.

  You'd be surprised how many from our generation have a more open viewpoint. The internet can be an echo chamber depending on where you hang out. Look around.

  But that's all ultimately irrelevant; if you like something you don't need social validation.

  Noooo, I'm not calling anybody dumb. It's tongue in cheek/playful, sorry if it was taken personal. I just really appreciate the prequels and like to play devil's advocate when given opportunity. I'd think here of all places people would appreciate an escape from groupthink. BTW I heartily agree with your opinion that the prequels are genius and TLJ is right behind 😉
